During the early 50s other industries open up, notably the Glass Bulbs Factory. The company benefited from new techniques in glass blowing brought about by ribbon machine technology undertaken in the USA. The firm supplied bulbs to the domestic market and also exported significant amounts. The Airbourne Shoe factory (later known as Airfix) open up on Scrooby Road and provided many jobs for local inhabitants.

The mining industry in the early 70s and again in first part of the 80s entered into industrial disputes as the industry tried to peg wages and bring coal production in line with demand whilst competing with coal imports. In the UK, national demand for coal was reducing in favour of cleaner fuels such as gas.

Harworth and Bircotes skyline changed in the late 80s and early 90s with the modernisation of the winding towers at the mine making a landmark that can be seen for miles around.
